Philip Rawson,Wayne Higby: Ceramics

Ceramics

Description

Ceramics Philip Rawson. Foreword by Wayne Higby "A moving book based on the knowledge of facts together with their overtones and resonances. . . . Its method is valid for an appreciation of art in all its branches."--Stella Kramrisch "With the unassuming title of Ceramics, Rawson has presented a very clear, orderly and thought-provoking guide for discussion. He provides words for those nebulous, or nonexistent, thoughts that students avoid talking about in critiques, and our professional associates talk all around, using whatever art language is being worn out at the time--'Is your work postmodernist yet?' Now we have no excuse to complain that there is no vocabulary. . . . "There is enough material in this little 223 page book to last a long time as a stimulus for thought and work in clay. It would be an excellent gift to your local newspaper art critic and a great reference book for teachers. . . . "Rawson defines a clear framework for discussing both the visual and psychological elements of the pottery tradition. The book presents a way to analyze and understand which particular elements touch or SPEAK to us across cultures and history. And there are enough pictures and diagrams to help out the less verbal."--National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Newsletter 1984 - 240 pages - 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 - 203 illus. ISBN 978-0-8122-1156-6 - Paper - $27.50t - 18.00 World Rights - Arts and Crafts Short copy: "It is rare to find a book on art that presents complex aesthetic principles in clear readable form. Ceramics, by Philip Rawson, is such a book. I discovered it ten years ago, and today my well-worn copy has scarcely a page on which some statement is not underlined and starred."--Wayne Higby, from the Foreword"

Children of the Revolution

Description

Seventeen years after fleeing the revolutionary Ethiopia that claimed his father's life, Stepha Stephanos is a man still caught between two existences: the one he left behind, aged nineteen, and the new life he has forged in Washington D.C. Sepha spends his days in a sort of limbo: quietly running his grocery store into the ground, revisiting the Russian classics, and toasting the old days with his friends Kenneth and Joseph, themselves emigrants from Africa. But when a white woman named Judith moves next door with her only daughter, Naomi, Sepha's life seems on the verge of change...

Writing for testers, QA specialists, developers, program managers, and architects alike, Whittaker answers crucial questions such as: * Why do some bugs remain invisible to automated testing--and how can I uncover them? * What techniques will help me consistently discover and eliminate "show stopper" bugs? * How do I make manual testing more effective--and less boring and unpleasant? * What's the most effective high-level test strategy for each project? * Which inputs should I test when I can't test them all? * Which test cases will provide the best feature coverage? * How can I get better results by combining exploratory testing with traditional script or scenario-based testing? * How do I reflect feedback from the development process, such as code changes? “Nothing special” is the best way to describe Owen Reeder—at least that's what he's been told all The Bloomsbury Cookbook: Recipes for Life, Love and Art pdf his life. When a stranger visits his father's bookstore, Owen's ordinary life spirals out of control and right into a world he didn't even know existed. Owen believes the only gift he possesses is his ability to devour books, but he is about to be forced into a battle that will affect two worlds: his and the unknown world of the Lowlands. Don't miss the exciting conclusion to the Wormling series (Book 5, "The Author's Blood").

The Bloomsbury Cookbook: Recipes for Life, Love and Art

Description

Here the Bloomsbury story is told in seven broadly chronological chapters, beginning in the 1890s and finishing in the very recent past. The Bloomsbury Group fostered a fresh, creative and vital way of living that encouraged debate and communication (only connect), as often as not across the dining table. Gathered at these tables were many of the great figures in art, literature and economics in the early twentieth century: E. M. Forster, Roger Fry, J. M. Keynes, Lytton Strachey and Virginia Woolf, among many others. Each chapter comprises a series of narratives, many of which are enhanced with an appropriate recipe, along with sketches, paintings, photographs, letters and handwritten notes, and featuring original quotations throughout. Part cookbook, part social and cultural history, this book will appeal to lovers of food and lovers of literature alike.

Part "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," part "Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe," Adam Silvera's extraordinary debut confronts race, class, and sexuality during one charged near-future summer in the Bronx. " "The Leteo Institute s revolutionary memory-relief procedure seems too good to be true to Aaron Soto miracle cure-alls don t tend to pop up in the Bronx projects. Aaron could never forget how he s grown up poor, how his friends aren t there for him, or how his father committed suicide in their one-bedroom apartment. Aaron has the support of his patient girlfriend, if not necessarily his distant brother and overworked mother, but it s not enough. Then Thomas shows up. He has a sweet movie-watching setup on his roof, and he doesn t mind Aaron s obsession with a popular fantasy series. There are nicknames, inside jokes. Most importantly, Thomas doesn t mind talking about Aaron s past. But Aaron s newfound happiness isn t welcome on his block. From bestselling author Suzanne Enoch-a governess is tempted by the forbidden passion of a seductive earl in this blistering romance in the With This Ring series A governess must never be alone with a man (her reputation mustn't have even a hint of scandal). She never questions her employer's commands (even when he's tempting her More Happy Than Not free ebook to forsake respectability for desire?). She must never, ever fall in love with someone above her station (especially a rake-no matter how devastating his kisses may be) ...If it weren't for that unfortunate incident at her last position, Alexandra Gallant wouldn't now be forced into the employ of Lucien Balfour. The sinfully attractive earl hired her to teach his young cousin, but his seductive whispers and toe-curling kisses suggest he has something far less respectable in mind ...And that will never happen. For although Lucien seems determined to teach her about pleasure, she has a few lessons to teach him about love!

Marissa Meyer: Cinder

Cinder

Description

Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth's fate hinges on one girl. . . . Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She's a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister's illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai's, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world's future. Marissa Meyer on "Cinder," writing, and leading men"Which of your characters is most like you?"I wish I could say that I'm clever and mechanically-minded like Cinder, but no--I can't fix anything. I'm much more like Cress, who makes a brief cameo in Cinder and then takes a more starring role in the third book. She's a romantic and a daydreamer and maybe a little on the naive side--things that could be said about me too--although she does find courage when it's needed most. I think we'd all like to believe we'd have that same inner strength if we ever needed it. "Where do you write?"I have a home office that I've decorated with vintage fairy tale treasures that I've collected (my favorite is a Cinderella cookie jar from the forties) and NaNoWriMo posters, but sometimes writing there starts to feel too much like work. On those days I'll write in bed or take my laptop out for coffee or lunch."If you were stranded on a desert island, which character from "Cinder" would you want with you?"Cinder, definitely! She has an internet connection in her brain, complete with the ability to send and receive comms (which are similar to e-mails). We'd just have enough time to enjoy some fresh coconut before we were rescued. "The next book in the Lunar Chronicles is called "Scarlet," and is about Little Red Riding Hood. What is appealing to you most about this character as you work on the book?"Scarlet is awesome--she's very independent, a bit temperamental, and has an outspokenness that tends to get her in trouble sometimes. She was raised by her grandmother, an ex-military pilot who now owns a small farm in southern France, who not only taught Scarlet how to fly a spaceship and shoot a gun, but also to have a healthy respect and appreciation for nature. I guess that's a lot of things that appeal to me about her, but she's been a really fun character to write! (The two leading men in Scarlet, Wolf and Captain Thorne, aren't half bad either.)

Many classic fairy tale characters might not have survived into the present were it not for Charles Perrault, a seventeenth-century French civil servant who rescued them from the oral tradition and committed them to paper. Three centuries later, Angela Carter, widely regarded as one of England s most imaginative writers, adapted them for contemporary readers. The result is a cornucopia of fantastic characters and timeless adventures, stylishly retold by a modern literary visionary. "Mary, Queen of Angels" is a nondenominational book that follows in the successful vein of two of Doreen Virtue's previous works, "The Healing Miracles of Archangel Raphael "and "The Miracles of Archangel Michael." Within these pages, Doreen brings forth a collection of true stories from people who have experienced dramatic healings by, and visitations from, Mary. Doreen ties these stories together by category--with comments and narrative for those who wish to deepen their own connection to Mary and the angels. "Mary, Queen of Angels" is for people of all faiths and beliefs. "It" is filled with prayers for Cinematography: Theory and Practice: Image Making for Cinematographers and Directors download ebook pdf various life situations, fascinating discussions about the history of Mary, and details about geographic locations where there have been sightings of her.

Stephen Gaukroger: The Emergence of a Scientific Culture: Science and the Shaping of Modernity 1210-1685

The Emergence of a Scientific Culture: Science and the Shaping of Modernity 1210-1685

Description

Why did science emerge in the West and how did scientific values come to be regarded as the yardstick for all other forms of knowledge? Stephen Gaukroger shows just how bitterly the cognitive and cultural standing of science was contested in its early development. Rejecting the traditional picture of secularization, he argues that science in the seventeenth century emerged not in opposition to religion but rather was in many respects driven by it. Moreover, science did not present a unified picture of nature but was an unstable field of different, often locally successful but just as often incompatible, programmes. To complicate matters, much depended on attempts to reshape the persona of the natural philosopher, and distinctive new notions of objectivity and impartiality were imported into natural philosophy, changing its character radically by redefining the qualities of its practitioners. The West's sense of itself, its relation to its past, and its sense of its future, have been profoundly altered since the seventeenth century, as cognitive values generally have gradually come to be shaped around scientific ones. Science has not merely brought a new set of such values to the task of understanding the world and our place in it, but rather has completely transformed the task, redefining the goals of enquiry. This distinctive feature of the development of a scientific culture in the West marks it out from other scientifically productive cultures. In The Emergence of a Scientific Culture, Stephen Gaukroger offers a detailed and comprehensive account of the formative stages of this development--and one which challenges the received wisdom that science was seen to be self-evidently the correct path to knowledge and that the benefits of science were immediately obvious to the disinterested observer.

It s time for Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath to return to the castle he turned his back on, to take what s rightfully his. Since the day he hung pinned on the thorns of a briar patch and watched Count Renar s men slaughter his mother and young brother, Jorg has been driven to vent his rage. Jeannette Walls: The Glass Castle

The Glass Castle

Description

This is a startling memoir of a successful journalist's journey from the deserted and dusty mining towns of the American Southwest, to an antique filled apartment on Park Avenue. Jeanette Walls narrates her nomadic and adventurous childhood with her dreaming, 'brilliant' but alcoholic parents. At the age of seventeen she escapes on a Greyhound bus to New York with her older sister; her younger siblings follow later. After pursuing the education and civilisation her parents sought to escape, Jeanette eventually succeeds in her quest for the 'mundane, middle class existence' she had always craved. In her apartment, overlooked by 'a portrait of someone else's ancestor' she recounts poignant remembered images of star watching with her father, juxtaposed with recollections of irregular meals, accidents and police-car chases and reveals her complex feelings of shame, guilt, pity and pride toward her parents.

Colin G. Kruse: Paul's Letter to the Romans

Paul's Letter to the Romans

Description

PAUL'S LETTER TO THE ROMANS may well be the most influential book in Christian history. In this Romans commentary Colin Kruse shows how Paul expounds the gospel against the background of God's sovereign action as creator, judge, and redeemer of the world. Valuable "additional notes" on important theological themes and difficult texts -- such as Paul's discussion of same-sex relationships, the salvation of "all Israel," and the woman Junia, who was "well known among the apostles" -- further connect Romans to contemporary issues. Throughout his commentary Kruse expertly guides readers through the plethora of interpretations of Romans, providing a reliable exposition of this foundational epistle.

Cat Winters: The Uninvited: A Novel

The Uninvited: A Novel

Description

From the award-winning author of In the Shadow of Blackbirds comes a stunning new novel-a masterfully crafted story of love, loss, and second chances. Set during the fear and panic of the Great Influenza of 1918, The Uninvited is part gothic ghost-story, part psychological thriller, perfect for those who loved The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield or The Vanishing by Wendy Webb. Twenty-five year old Ivy Rowan rises from her bed after being struck by the flu, only to discover the world has been torn apart in just a few short days. But Ivy's life-long gift-or curse-remains. For she sees the uninvited ones-ghosts of loved ones who appear to her, unasked, unwelcomed, for they always herald impending death. On that October evening in 1918 she sees the spirit of her grandmother, rocking in her mother's chair. An hour later, she learns her younger brother and father have killed a young German out of retaliation for the death of Ivy's older brother Billy in the Great War. Horrified, she leaves home, to discover the flu has caused utter panic and the rules governing society have broken down. Ivy is drawn into this new world of jazz, passion, and freedom, where people live for the day, because they could be stricken by nightfall. But as her 'uninvited guests' begin to appear to her more often, she knows her life will be torn apart once more, but Ivy has no inkling of the other-worldly revelations about to unfold. The Uninvited is an atmospheric, haunting, and utterly compelling novel.

THUMB-INDEXED EDITION - Increased memory and concentration -"San Francisco Chronicle" Droofus the kindly dragon has a price on his head, but the small boy who befriends him refuses to sell him to the king. "Children will enjoy this amusing combination of fantasy and realism, and especially the cheerful illustrations of a likeable dragon." -- School Library Journal Explains how these techniques can forestall the need for surgery in early stages of prostate disease Have you ever had the nagging feeling that the problems the country faces are spiraling out of control, that the government has lost its way and that, despite its promises, nothing ever changes? Well, you're right. In every instance where government gets involved in people's lives with a desire to do good, it can always be relied on to make the situation much, much worse. Yet despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, we imagine that a world without the state would be a wild and terrifying place. With wit and devastating clarity of argument, Frisby shows in this book that The Uninvited: A Novel download book human nature proves the opposite to be true. Welcome to Life After the State. "Dominic Frisby has gone and done something extraordinary: written a page-turner on the economy. It's both readable and radical, a serious book that is, by turn, fascinating, alarming and contentious. At times, the book makes you want to shout its message from the rooftops; at others, it just makes you want to shout. Life after the State challenges so much of what we take for granted.

Taking its title from the colloquial term "grass," meaning a work of minor value, Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" is anything but that. Over his lifetime Whitman would continue to expand and revise his most famous book up until his death in 1892. Emily Witt: Future Sex

Future Sex

Description

Emily Witt is single and in her thirties. She has slept with most of her male friends. Most of her male friends have slept with most of her female friends. Sexual promiscuity is the norm. But up until a few years ago, she still envisioned her sexual experience "eventually reaching a terminus, like a monorail gliding to a stop at Epcot Center. "Like many people, she imagined herself disembarking, finding herself face-to-face with another human being, "and there we would remain' in our permanent station in life: the future." But, as we all know, things are more complicated than that. Love is rare and frequently unreciprocated. Sexual acquisitiveness is risky and can be hurtful. And generalizing about what women want or don't want or should want or should do seems to lead nowhere. Don't our temperaments, our hang-ups, and our histories define our lives as much as our gender? In Future Sex, Witt captures the experiences of going to bars alone, dating online, and hooking up with strangers. From her home in San Francisco, she decides to say yes to everything and to find her own path. She observes the subcultures she encounters with a wry sense of humour, capturing them in all of their strangeness, ridiculousness, and beauty. The result is an open-minded, honest account of the contemporary pursuit of connection and pleasure, and an inspiring new model of female sexuality-open, forgiving, and unafraid.

Astrological Oracle Cards

Description

Created with the sweetest Art Nouveau artwork, each Sign and Planet takes life and speaks to your intuition. More than an oracle deck and more than just inspirational cards, the Astrological oracle draws upon the stars to help us in our everyday life.

But the anticipated sweetness of their homecoming is quickly tempered by a galling memory from the past. Mary had met Damian Adler only once before, when the surrealist painter had been charged with and exonerated from murder. Now the troubled young man is enlisting the Holmeses help again, this time in a desperate search for his missing wife and child. Poet and post-punk heroine Eileen Myles has always operated in the art, writing, and queer performance scenes as a kind of observant flaneur. Like Baudelaire's gentleman stroller, Myles travels the city--wandering on garbage-strewn New York streets in the heat of summer, drifting though the antiseptic malls of La Jolla, and riding in the van with Sister Spit--seeing it with a poet's eye for detail and with the consciousness that writing about art and culture has always been a social gesture. Culled by the poet from twenty years of art writing, the essays in The Importance of Being Iceland make a Astrological Oracle Cards free ebook lush document of her--and our--lives in these contemporary crowds. Framed by Myles's account of her travels in Iceland, these essays posit inbetweenness as the most vital position from which to perceive culture as a whole, and a fluidity in national identity as the best model for writing and thinking about art and culture.

Summer in Baden-Baden: A Novel

Description

Summer in Baden-Baden was acclaimed by The New York Review of Books as "a short poetic masterpiece" and by Donald Fanger in The Los Angeles Times as "gripping, mysterious and profoundly moving." A complex, highly original novel, Summer in Baden-Baden has a double narrative. It is wintertime, late December: a species of "now." A narrator Tsypkinis on a train going to Leningrad. And it is also mid-April 1867. The newly married Dostoyevskys, Fyodor, and his wife, Anna Grigor'yevna, are on their way to Germany, for a four-year trip. This is not, like J. M. Coetzee's The Master of St. Petersburg, a Dostoyevsky fantasy. Neither is it a docu-novel, although its author was obsessed with getting everything "right." Nothing is invented, everything is invented. Dostoyevsky's reckless passions for gambling, for his literary vocation, for his wife, are matched by her all-forgiving love, which in turn resonates with the love of literature's disciple, Leonid Tsypkin, for Dostoyevsky. In a remarkable introductory essay (which appeared in The New Yorker), Susan Sontag explains why it is something of a miracle that Summer in Baden-Baden has survived, and celebrates the happy event of its publication in America with an account of Tsypkin's beleaguered life and the important pleasures of his marvelous novel. "
